Writing Culturally Competent Performance Reviews

Let’s face it. A manager’s job is to judge.

But we judge from our own perspective, through our own lens. Of course, this is a natural
thing to do, but we all know that judging from only one perspective can be biased. We
often try to help people to be successful in the way that we were successful, but we aren't
all the same. Each employee brings their own unique talents and gifts to the organization.
When we write performance reviews, we want to make sure that we are writing them in a
way that recognizes and values the talents and perspectives of our employees and that
we’re not trying to build a clone of ourselves.

Certainly not all performance issues are cultural issues, but there are far more cultural
issues than we realize. Your job is to discern between the two. This cheat sheet will help
you do that.
